How it all started
Hi, I'm Janie and I appreciate you checking out my page! Here’s a little bit about how Seams Come True (formerly Jaybird Crafts Ohio) got started.
I'm a 34 year old cat mom and I learned how to use a sewing machine from my life skills teacher when I was in high school in my rural town in Ohio. I didn't start utilizing the skill until years later when I joined a community of the LOVELIEST people who made garb for their events in the Society of Creative Anachronism. (If you've never heard of it, you should check it out!) I made my first dress for SCA events in 2017 — a Viking apron dress using online directions and my own measurements — and was SHOCKED when it actually fit me. Fast forward, life happens and I ended up living in Texas during the pandemic.
I started having serious health problems at the end of 2019 and then when the pandemic started, I had to leave my job as a veterinary assistant. I had a sewing machine that was given to me years ago and it had made it with me to Texas, so I started experimenting with it while I was quarantined in my little duplex with my five cats. (Don't worry, we have lots of lint rollers!) I had a new t-shirt and some fabric I had stashed away from another project, so I made a few masks for myself.
I starting giving them to friends and family, but because they’re sweet baby angels and knew I was having a rough time, they started paying me for them. That led me to set up an Etsy shop, selling only masks. I wanted to make other things that I didn't need measurements to use and I thought of my first sewing project — my apron dress. I used measurements for it, but what about kitchen aprons?
The holiday season was coming up so I went to Jo-Ann Fabrics (RIP :( ) and found some fun fabric that I thought might look cute together. I took it home, found an apron pattern on Etsy (shoutout to ModernVintageDesign!), and started putting together Christmas aprons.
Once again, my amazing friends and family started buying them from me, so I decided to list them my on Etsy store. They sold much quicker than I expected so I went back to Jo-Ann Fabrics and searched for patterns that weren’t holiday-related. I made new aprons, listed them, and was surprised that people wanted them, too.
Life happened again and I ended up back in Ohio. I attended a few shows as a vendor once I settled back in and my family and friends SHOWED UP for me. Their support means absolutely everything to me. Vendor shows have become more difficult for me to attend due to my health issues and life circumstances, so now I’m here, trying my hand at my own website so I can expand my range of projects!
I still have an Etsy shop and I'll link it, but now you can purchase directly from this site. If you've made it this far, thank you for reading my rambling story and I hope you find something you enjoy here! :)
